NHS Dentist in Cambridge: Why It’s So Hard to Find One — and What to Do Instead

If you’ve recently searched “NHS dentist near me” or “NHS dentist Cambridge,” you’re not alone. Finding an NHS dentist in Cambridgeshire has become one of the most frustrating healthcare struggles in the region. You may have just moved to Cambourne, Bourn, Bar Hill, Papworth Everard, or Caldecote. Or perhaps you’ve simply outgrown a childhood practice. Either way, you’ve probably heard the same response: we are not accepting new NHS patients.

This article explains why — honestly and in full — and what your realistic options are right now.

Why Can’t You Find an NHS Dentist in Cambridge or Cambourne?

The core issue is simple: there are not enough NHS dental appointments to meet demand. Furthermore, this problem has been getting worse for over two decades.

Each year, NHS dental practices receive a fixed number of Units of Dental Activity (UDAs) under their NHS contract. These UDAs cap how much care a practice can deliver under NHS terms. Once a practice uses them up, it cannot take on more NHS patients. In practice, it doesn’t matter whether the waiting room is empty or the dentist has free slots. Without UDAs, no NHS treatment can take place.

As a result, NHS dental lists across Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire have closed to new patients — in many cases for years.

The NHS Dental Contract: Twenty Years of Underfunding

The current NHS dental contract dates back to 2006. In the twenty years since, central government has invested very little in meaningful reform — despite dramatic rises in the cost of running a dental practice.

Consequently, NHS reimbursement rates have not kept pace with inflation, staff wages, or equipment costs. Many dentists want to serve NHS patients. However, the more NHS work they take on, the more financially exposed their practice becomes.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has been vocal on this point. Specifically, it has highlighted that government fees often fail to cover the cost of delivering treatments. For new patient examinations, for example, the BDA estimates the typical dentist loses around £7 per appointment. In other words, the government’s payment simply does not cover the cost of the visit. As a result, dentists providing NHS care subsidise that care themselves — effectively paying for the privilege of working. The BDA has made clear this is the main reason dentists struggle to fulfil their NHS contracts.

A practice that relied solely on NHS income would therefore face serious risk of insolvency. Wages, materials, laboratory fees, and compliance costs all keep rising. NHS contract rates, however, have not followed. This is not a matter of greed. Rather, it is a matter of arithmetic.

Because of this, more and more dentists across the UK are reducing their NHS commitments or moving to private practice entirely. Not because they don’t want to help patients. Instead, it is because the current system makes it financially unviable.

Why Monkfield Dental Doesn’t Hold an NHS Contract — and Why We Can’t Get One

We are a private dental practice. We want to be transparent about why.

Even if we wanted to offer NHS services to our Cambourne community, we couldn’t. NHS England does not open dental contracts to new applications in the way you might expect. In fact, new contracts are exceptionally rare. Despite the clear and documented need for more NHS dental provision in this area, new and existing private practices simply cannot access them.

Understandably, we find this genuinely frustrating. Cambourne is one of the largest new towns in the UK. The demand for accessible dental care here is obvious. Indeed, many of our patients come to us precisely because they cannot find NHS dentistry anywhere locally. We would have explored an NHS contract if the system allowed it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.

The Impact on Patients Across South Cambridgeshire

The consequences of this shortage are real and serious. When people can’t access routine dental care, minor problems go untreated. For instance, a small cavity, early gum disease, or a loose filling can become an extraction, an abscess, or a complex restoration. In short, delayed care almost always costs more — in dental health and in money.

Rural Communities Feel This Most

The CB23 corridor — covering Cambourne, Bourn, Caxton, Papworth, Caldecote, Knapwell and surrounding villages — faces particular challenges. While Cambridge city centre offers more options, out here patients often travel significant distances just to reach any NHS provision.

Don’t Let the Shortage Become a Reason to Avoid Care

If you don’t have an NHS dentist, please don’t use that as a reason to skip dental care altogether. As we’ve seen, the longer you leave a problem, the more complex and costly treatment becomes. Fortunately, private dentistry is more accessible than many people assume — and we’ll explain exactly what that looks like at Monkfield.

Private Dentistry at Monkfield Dental: Accessible, Transparent, and Local

We have served the Cambourne community since our founding, and we see the impact of the NHS shortage every week. Patients arrive who haven’t had a check-up in years. Others come in pain that earlier treatment could have prevented. Many, moreover, are simply trying to balance their dental health with a household budget.

We don’t think private dentistry should be out of reach. That is why we offer:

  • new patient examination from £60 — a clear, no-surprise starting point
  • Transparent pricing with no hidden charges
  • Flexible payment options to spread the cost of treatment
  • Short waiting times — no months-long lists
  • A full range of treatments from routine check-ups to dental implants, restorative work, and cosmetic dentistry

Whether you’ve just moved to Great Cambourne, relocated from elsewhere in Cambridgeshire, or simply haven’t seen a dentist in longer than you’d like to admit — we are here, and we are accepting new patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a private check-up cost at Monkfield Dental? Our new patient examination starts from £60. It includes a full clinical assessment and X-rays where needed. As a result, you’ll leave with a clear treatment plan and transparent costings. No surprises, no pressure.

Do you offer payment plans? Yes. We offer flexible payment options for patients who need to spread the cost of treatment. Simply ask our team when you book and we’ll walk you through the options.

I haven’t seen a dentist in years — will I be judged? Absolutely not. In fact, many of our patients come to us after a long gap, often because NHS access simply wasn’t available to them. Our job is to help you move forward, not to make you feel bad about the past.

Can I register as an NHS patient with you? Unfortunately not. We cannot offer NHS dental treatment — not by choice, but because NHS contracts are unavailable to us despite the need in our area. However, we work hard to make private care as affordable and accessible as possible as an alternative.

What areas do you serve? We are at 8 High Street, Great Cambourne, CB23 6BJ. We see patients from Cambourne, Bourn, Bar Hill, Caldecote, Papworth Everard, Caxton, Knapwell, Elsworth, and across South Cambridgeshire.

What if I have a dental emergency? Simply book a same-day emergency appointment directly on our website, or call us and we’ll get you in as fast as possible. Don’t suffer in silence — we are here to help.
